What is a “flexible fuel vehicle”?

In particular, Brazil, one of the countries farthest from China in the straight line, is famous for its “flexible fuel vehicle” that mixes ethanol and gasoline.

Ethanol gasoline, as the name suggests, is a certain amount of ethanol added to gasoline, after blending and then used as vehicle fuel. In China, E10 ethanol gasoline is a blend of 90% gasoline and 10% ethanol.

Alcohol gasoline is not a new concept that has appeared in recent decades and has existed in some countries for nearly 100 years.

So, whether ethanol gasoline can replace ordinary gasoline, and compared with ordinary gasoline, what are ethanol’s advantages and disadvantages?

The main difference between regular gasoline and ethanol gasoline is that they contain different chemicals. Regular gasoline is mainly composed of hydrocarbons, such as octane, benzene, and toluene. Ethanol gasoline also contains small amounts of water and impurities. In addition, ethanol gasoline has fewer harmless emissions than regular gasoline, making it more environmentally friendly. However, compared with ordinary gasoline, ethanol gasoline has a higher price, which is one reason restricting its popularity. In addition, when using ethanol gasoline, the fuel system and engine of the vehicle need to be modified and adjusted accordingly to adapt to the use of ethanol gasoline.

Advantages:

Ethanol gasoline is indeed more environmentally friendly. Its combustion temperature is lower, the thermal efficiency is higher, and the effect inhibits engine overheating to a certain extent (ethanol has a much stronger heat absorption capacity than gasoline).

Theoretically, ethanol has a high octane index and a strong cleaning power, but it has a lower calorific value than gasoline. As a daily vehicle, if the unit price is lower than gasoline, it is very good, saving fuel treasure. It does emit less carbon than conventional gasoline.

Ethanol gasoline is to solve the inventory of aged grain, the domestic to protect the grain to buy farmers’ corn at high prices, corn generally exists in the grain depot for 3 years, 3 years after the aged grain is auctioned, part of the feed part made into alcohol mixed into gasoline. However the price of ethanol is a commodity, and the ex-factory price is slightly higher than the ex-factory price of gasoline.

Alcohol has a lower calorific value than gasoline, so it doesn’t run.

After the use of ethanol gasoline, the water in the exhaust pipe of the car is more than before, especially on some large slope sections, and the water slipping out will freeze immediately under the condition of more than ten degrees, especially on the large uphill sections, and the icing is more serious. It causes serious accident hazards, is relatively thin, and can not be removed by using snowplows.

Canadian gasoline has been spiked with ethanol for more than 20 years.

In the United States, government subsidies for ethanol, especially E85, promote E85. Sales infrastructure development, especially in corn-growing states in the Midwest.

Germany is E5/E10, are 95, there is the so-called super 100, each gas station has than E5 about 7% expensive look, the general 1.80 oil price is 15 cent or more expensive.

The official statistics of the United States fuel consumption increased by 3-4%, E10 is 10% of ethanol, and the theoretical calorific value of ethanol is 60% of gasoline, equivalent to 90% of gasoline *100% calorific value +10% of ethanol *60% calorific value =96%, and then 100%/96%=104.16%.

Whether ethanol gasoline can replace ordinary gasoline can only say that it can not be completely replaced at present. Only the two can coexist, progress, and development.
