Let’s talk about the oil workers in Central Asia

What oil and gas cooperation projects does PetroChina have in Central Asia?

1. Hard work to form full-chain cooperation

China National Petroleum Corporation’s oil and gas cooperation in Central Asia began with its participation in the Aktobe project in Kazakhstan in 1997. At present, several pearl projects such as the Amu Darya gas project, the Aktobe project, and the Shymkent refinery have been formed, representing the upstream, midstream, pipeline construction and operation, oil refining and oil product trade, engineering technology, and engineering construction, oil and gas equipment and transportation, information technology, and logistics support.

2. Overcoming difficulties and striving to become world-class

Through independent exploration, PetroChina has discovered the largest onshore oil field in Kazakhstan since 1991, the North Trova Oilfield; discovered multiple new oil and gas reservoirs in the South Turgay Basin, which has a high degree of exploration; and overcome the world-class difficulties in the development of the complex carbonate oil field under the salt of Kenkiyak in Kazakhstan; playing the role of a shareholder, the Kashagan project in the Caspian Sea has an annual production capacity of 26 million tons of crude oil. In the Amu Darya project in Turkmenistan, six 100 billion cubic meters of gas areas were discovered and implemented. A series of drilling process supporting technologies were developed for the “three highs” gas reservoirs and complex structures, with a drilling success rate of 100%, making the Amu Darya project the first natural gas project of PetroChina abroad with an oil and gas production equivalent of tens of millions of tons and a gas supply capacity of tens of billions of cubic meters, which provides strong support for my country’s winter natural gas supply.

3. Build channels and strengthen connectivity

The Central Asia natural gas pipeline has an annual gas transmission capacity of 55 billion cubic meters, accounting for about 1/9 of my country’s annual apparent natural gas consumption. The cumulative gas transmission has exceeded 500 billion cubic meters; the yearly gas transmission capacity of the Kazakhstan South Line is 15 billion cubic meters, and the cumulative gas transmission has exceeded 82 billion cubic meters. The China-Kazakhstan crude oil pipeline is Kazakhstan’s first international energy channel directly connected to the international terminal market, which has effectively promoted the diversification of Kazakhstan’s energy exports and has cumulatively transported 181 million tons of oil.

4. Sharing results and fulfilling social responsibilities

In the cooperation, PetroChina actively fulfilled its social responsibilities, participated in public welfare undertakings, and helped local social development; it created more than 40,000 jobs in Central Asia, with a localization rate of more than 95%; it sponsored the construction of several important public welfare projects such as the Kazakhstan National Dance Academy; and funded hundreds of outstanding students to receive higher education in China. Many cooperation projects such as the Aktobe Project and the Amu Darya Natural Gas Project were praised by the leaders of the host countries as “cooperation models”, shaping the good brand image of Chinese enterprises in resource-rich countries.
