Selection and installation of oil tanks at gas stations

Oil tanks are basic oil storage equipment at gas stations. According to GB50156-2012 “Design and Construction Specifications for Automobile Gasoline and Gas Stations”,

the selection of oil tanks at gas stations should meet the following requirements.

1. Horizontal oil tanks should be used for oil storage tanks at automobile gas stations.

2. Buried tanks can be double-layer steel oil tanks, double-layer glass fiber reinforced plastic oil tanks,

and double-layer oil tanks with steel inside and glass fiber reinforced plastic outside.

3. The nominal thickness of the steel plate used for the tank body and head of the steel oil tank should not be less than the provisions in the following table (unit: mm).

Nominal diameter of oil tank Single-layer and double-layer inner tanks Double-layer steel oil tank outer tank
Tank Head Tank Head
800-1600 5 6 4 5
1601-2500 6 7 5 6
2501-3000 7 8 5 6

4. The wall thickness of the double-layer glass fiber-reinforced plastic oil tank should not be less than 4mm.

5. Non-metals such as glass fiber-reinforced plastics that are in direct contact with the oil in the tank should meet the requirements of eliminating static charges, and their surface resistivity should be less than 109 ohms.

To use the oil tank normally, various accessories need to be installed on the oil tank. The types and functions of these accessories are shown in the following table.

Category Accessory name Location Effect
Check the equipment Manhole On the tank neck cover For inspection and maintenance by personnel entering and leaving
Measuring hole On the tank neck cover Measure oil level and take oil samples
Transceiver equipment Oil inlet and outlet pipes 20-30cm from the bottom of the can Oil in and out
Oil unloading anti-overflow valve Oil inlet position Prevent spills when unloading oil
Bottom valve Oil outlet pipe suction port Facilitates oil pumping
Air pressure regulating equipment Ventilation pipe On the oil tank Reduce oil loss and protect oil tank safety
Breathing valve On the oil tank (above-ground tanks need to be equipped with a breathing valve)
Safety and fire protection equipment Flame arrester Below or above the breather valve on the fuel tank Fire prevention to ensure the safety of oil and oil tanks
Sewage equipment Drain pipe Bottom of the oil tank
Measurement equipment Liquid level meter On the tank neck cover Real-time measurement of liquid level

1. The oil inlet and outlet of the underground tank are generally connected by the tank top manhole cover, extending to about 20cm from the bottom of the tank. The diameter of the oil outlet pipe should not be less than 50mm, and the diameter of the unloading (inlet) oil pipe should be determined according to the unloading pipe of the tank truck. Generally, the two should have the same diameter, which is convenient for connection.

2. The unloading ports of the gas station are centrally arranged to facilitate the unloading operation.

3. An anti-overflow valve is installed at the unloading (inlet) port. Function of the anti-overflow valve: When the oil product rises to about 95% of the tank capacity, the mechanical device of the anti-overflow valve is released and the main valve is automatically closed to prevent oil from overflowing; After the main valve is closed, the oil accumulated in the unloading pipe can only be discharged through a bypass valve, and the unloading can be stopped at this time; if the unloading is not stopped in time, when the oil exceeds 98% of the tank capacity, the bypass valve will be completely closed, completely cutting off the oil, until the oil level drops below the reset point, it will return to the initial state and can be refilled.

4. When the oil tank is buried underground, only a flame arrester needs to be installed at the vent pipe, and a breathing valve is not required; if it is an above-ground tank, not only a flame arrester but also a breathing valve should be installed. According to the specification, the vent pipe should be at least 4m above the ground.
