Previously, the Key Laboratory of Coal Resources Exploration and Comprehensive Utilization of the Ministry of Natural Resources organized 9 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 2 experts from universities to inspect the project results. “This is the world’s first pilot test project for underground in-situ pyrolysis oil recovery from oil-rich coal. It has opened up the oil recovery process and successfully extracted the tar contained in coal before coal mining. It is important for increasing the supply of domestic oil and gas resources and promoting coal production. Clean and efficient utilization is of great significance,” said Peng Suping, leader of the acceptance expert group and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Coal is still an irreplaceable main energy source in my country and plays a fundamental role in ensuring energy security. As an important energy production base in my country, Shaanxi’s coal output ranks third in the country. “The tar yield of oil-rich coal in northern Shaanxi reaches about 9%. Extracting tar from coal through underground in-situ pyrolysis mining is equivalent to recreating the Daqing Oilfield.” Wang Shuangming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said.
In 2021, Shaanxi Coalfield Geology Group Co., Ltd. will rely on the Key Laboratory of Coal Resources Exploration and Comprehensive Utilization of the Ministry of Natural Resources, jointly with Xi’an Jiaotong University and Xi’an University of Science and Technology to give full play to the advantages of Qinchuang’s innovative driving platform and take the lead in the efficient in-situ development of oil-rich coal. Carry out original research on pyrolysis enhanced oil production and efficient mining complete set of technologies, and conduct pilot tests in the Dabaodang well field in Shenmu City, Yulin.
After three years of technical research and engineering testing, in September 2023, the underground in-situ pyrolysis mining process of oil-rich coal in northern Shaanxi was completed for the first time. In October, the world’s first barrel of underground in-situ pyrolysis coal tar was successfully extracted.
“In the past, most of the tar in oil-rich coal in northern Shaanxi was burned. Nowadays, the pilot test of underground in-situ pyrolysis mining of oil-rich coal in northern Shaanxi has achieved a technological breakthrough, and the ‘coal sea’ can be transformed into an ‘oil sea’. National Energy Safety is more guaranteed, and transforming oil-rich coal from fuel to ‘fuel + raw material’ will help achieve the ‘double carbon’ goal.” said Xie Hui, Party Secretary and Chairman of Shaanxi Coalfield Geology Group Co., Ltd.
